How electricians get more leads without buying them

Most "get more leads" advice for electricians ends at "buy leads from Angi." So you pay for a homeowner who three other electricians also bought, race them to the phone, and then compete on price against everyone else holding the same lead. There's a better way to think about this. Leads come from channels you own versus channels you rent, and the goal is to build the owned kind while converting more of the calls you already get.

I've done SEO since 1999, and here's the pattern I see with electricians and leads: they either overspend on shared leads that never quite pay off, or they generate calls and then leak half of them at the phone. Let's fix both. First, understand the difference between the two kinds of leads, because it changes everything about where you put your money.

Bought leads versus owned leads

A bought lead from Angi, Thumbtack, or HomeAdvisor is a rental. You pay, they hand you a homeowner they also handed to three or four of your competitors, and you all race to call first and undercut each other. The lead isn't loyal to you, the intent is often soft, and the second you stop paying, the flow stops. It can smooth out a slow week, but it's a treadmill: you never stop paying, and you never build anything.

An owned lead comes from a channel you control: your ranking in local search, your reviews, your website, your referral flow. It costs more to build up front, but the lead is exclusive, the intent is higher (they searched and chose you), and it keeps producing after the work is done. The whole strategy below is about shifting your lead mix away from rented and toward owned.

1. Own local search, your best owned channel

When someone needs an electrician, they search: "electrician near me," "emergency electrician [city]," "panel upgrade [city]." They look at the three companies in the Google map, check reviews, and call one. Being one of those three, with the reviews to win the call, is the single best source of exclusive, high-intent leads there is, and once you're there it keeps producing without paying per lead. Our client Newman Electric is top-ranked on Google Maps for "emergency electrician Vancouver WA," and that ranking is the backbone of their lead flow. This is local SEO for electricians, and the broader program ranks you for each service you offer.

2. Local Service Ads: paid, but the lead is yours

Here's the key difference between LSA and a shared portal. Local Service Ads are also pay-per-lead, but the lead comes to you directly, backed by the Google Guaranteed badge that homeowners trust, and it sits at the very top of the results. It's a far better paid lead than a shared portal contact, and it produces calls fast, sometimes within the first week. Run it to fill the pipeline while your free rankings build underneath, then lean on the free rankings as they compound. Here's how the paid channels compare.

3. Reviews, because they turn searches into calls

Two electricians show up in the map. One has 120 reviews, the other has 11. Who gets the call? Reviews are the deciding factor in whether a search becomes a lead, and they're a ranking factor on top of that. Build them on a system: a review request that goes out automatically after every job, so it happens every time instead of when you remember. Do that for a few months and you pull ahead of every competitor still asking by hand. Here's the full review system.

4. A fast site with a real page per service

Your website is where a lead either forms or dies. If it loads slowly on a phone, the homeowner taps the next electrician before it even appears. And if it's one generic "Services" list, it loses to a competitor with a real page on EV charger installation or panel upgrades, because Google ranks pages, and buyers convert on the one that answers exactly what they searched. A fast site with a dedicated page per service turns more of your hard-won traffic into actual leads. Here's what an electrician site needs to do.

5. Convert the leads you already get

This is the one most electricians skip, and it's free money. You can double your leads on paper and book the same number of jobs if you're leaking calls. A homeowner with a dead panel calls three electricians and hires whoever answers first. So: answer the phone. Set up missed-call text-back so a missed call turns into a text within seconds instead of a lost job. Follow up on every quote instead of waiting for them to call you. A lead you don't answer is a lead you paid to generate and then handed to a competitor. Speed to lead is the cheapest growth there is.

6. Systematize referrals

Referrals are the highest-trust leads you'll ever get, and most electricians leave them to chance. Do great work, then make the referral easy: a follow-up after the job, a simple way to pass your name along, and that same automatic review request (a public review is a referral that keeps working for years). You already earn the goodwill; the system just makes sure it turns into the next job instead of evaporating.

Put it together

Stop treating "get more leads" as "buy more leads." Build the owned channels, local search first, LSA for speed, reviews and a fast service-page site to convert, referrals on a system, and then plug the leak at the phone so you keep the leads you generate. Do that and your cost per booked job falls every month instead of climbing. That's the opposite of the shared-lead treadmill.

Common questions about electrician leads

They can fill a slow week, but understand what you're buying: a shared lead. The same homeowner gets sold to three or four electricians at once, so you're racing competitors to call first and then competing on price against everyone else who bought the same lead. You're also renting, the moment you stop paying, the leads stop. Owned channels like local search cost more to build but the leads are yours, exclusive, and don't vanish when the invoice does. Use portals to smooth out slow patches, not as your foundation. Here's how to build owned lead flow.

Local Service Ads and Google Ads. LSA (the Google Guaranteed listings at the top) is pay-per-lead, but unlike a shared portal the lead is yours and the Google Guaranteed badge builds trust, and it can produce calls within days, we've seen leads in the first week. Run it while your SEO builds the free rankings underneath. Fast leads are realistic; the durable free rankings take a few months and ongoing work, then keep coming without paying per lead. Here's the LSA-versus-ads-versus-SEO breakdown.

Usually it's speed and follow-up, not the leads. A homeowner with no power calls three electricians and hires whoever picks up first; if you miss the call and don't text back within a couple of minutes, that job is gone. The fixes are cheap: answer the phone, use missed-call text-back so no lead goes cold, and follow up on quotes instead of waiting. More leads won't help if you're leaking the ones you already get.

Ranking in local search. When someone searches "electrician near me" or "panel upgrade [city]," the companies in the map with the most reviews get the calls, and once you're there the leads keep coming without paying per lead. It takes a few months of work to build and ongoing effort to hold, but it's the only channel that gets cheaper over time instead of more expensive. Our client Newman Electric is top-ranked on Google Maps for "emergency electrician Vancouver WA," and it's the backbone of their lead flow.

Systematize the ask. Most electricians do great work and then hope the customer mentions them; a system makes it happen every time. A follow-up after the job that thanks them and makes it easy to refer, plus a steady review request (reviews are referrals that work while you sleep), compounds over time. Do quality work, then make sure it's easy for happy customers to send you the next one. Here's the review system that feeds this.
